Ceramics

The ceramics studio provides students with the opportunity to work with either functional or non-functional art. Functional ceramics may include pieces used for the storing, cooking or serving of food, as well as many other possibilities. Non-functional works of art may include mosaics, sculptural portraits among others.

Students will learn a variety of forming processes from throwing on the potter’s wheel and working with slab construction to coil building and the building armatures to support sculptural pieces. Mould making is also used for reproducing original work or for the expropriation of existing forms.

Although all three major clay types are used in the Bealart ceramic studio,(earthenware, stoneware and porcelain) stoneware clay is the central focus of the program. Stoneware provides high durability, while allowing for many colour choices and surface treatment possibilities.

Many Bealart ceramic majors have gone on to study ceramics at the post-secondary level at institutions across North America..
